April Showers, bring May….

Flowers usually, but here in Memphis, April showers bring May floods.

I’ve been very busy this past month, and I haven’t managed to get anything done for “me”. This past month has kind of sucked, and it almost got a whole lot worse. As I sit here in my favorite corner of a favorite store surrounded by friends, I just about had a major meltdown.

My much beloved Alienware machine wasn’t booting up at all. I had power through the cord, partial power in the battery, and when I hit the power button, NOTHING HAPPENED. I counted to fifteen. NOTHING STILL. I hit the button again, and STILL NOTHING. So I got up and asked if the tech wiz was going to be coming in today, and they said yes. I relaxed one degree. I commented to people that I was going to have a major meltdown if I couldn’t get my computer to boot. Then I returned to my corner, flipped her over again, took out the battery and put it back in. Then turned Alien back upright, and opened the lid. I hit the power button again. HOLY WORD. LIGHTS!!!! Alien started to boot up then. And announced that she hadn’t shut down properly to begin with.

Guess who is now going to wait until the laptop is completely powered off before she closes it again. This morning scared the all and holy hells outta me. (By the way, after my scare, I lose a bit of my language filter, so be aware the are a few instances of ‘foul’ language from here on)

Anyways, there is a reason for me posting about this. Beyond the obvious, I need to get it off my chest, sort of deal. Why, you ask? Because it brings up a major point that writers need to remember!

BACKING UP THE SHIT ON THE COMPUTER!

Why did my scare of scares this morning bring this up? Because I haven’t backed up the contents of this computer in at least a couple of months. That would be a lot of stuff and work lost. So tonight, when I get home, I’m going to be booting up my laptops, and every one of my computers in the house and backing up the important stuff.

My roommate and I’s entire collection of music. Including CD’s that I have lost and haven’t been able to find to repurchase, Foreign music which I got through friends in other hemispheres that I no longer talk to (and that they don’t sell in the US).  My pictures of things that I’ve lost, and my fandom pictures that I’m not sure I could find again.

But most importantly, the four novels in progress with the several short stories attached. That would have been highly traumatic. More traumatic than when a complete hard drive meltdown happened to me, costing me over a year’s worth of work in small things, and music collecting (mostly foreign music again -also, this was about 6/7 years ago).

I started writing again, hardcore in 2009, I’d never really put the pen down, but I hadn’t really put many words on paper. In 2009, I went back to NaNoWriMo and every year since, I have managed to win. I’ve got several universes that I like to play in, but three that are my main things right now. They’re nicknamed Revanta, Metropolis, and Space Saga.

Alas, I’ve run out of thought here, and really should get a Writing:101 together for everyone to enjoy. And my short stories. I really need to work on my short stories.
